The NHS Commissioning Board will take responsibility for delivery of primary care information services from 1 April 2013 onwards. However, responsibility for operational management of general practice information technology (GP IT) and related funding will be delegated to CCGs. This means CCGs will take on commissioning of clinical systems and associated hardware and network services along with related support services such as training on the systems for practices.

The NHS Commissioning Board has published the GP IT operating model entitled 'Securing excellence in GP IT Services' which aims to support CCGs in understanding the arrangements for GP IT transferring from PCTs into the new health system. The operating model covers the following areas:

  • scope of operational GP IT services;
  • accountabilities and responsibilities of service delivery;
  • tasks and functions to support service delivery; and
  • financial support.
